I recently finished this oversized coat for a client. It's made of a heavy twill like fabric and has a felt lining. It also has a button placket and zipper inside. I essentially made a similar coat to one my client owned. He asked me to recreate it for him. He was very pleased with the results. But the kicker is I used a pajama pattern to create it. I've been sewing long enough that I know how to grab a pattern that has the general shape that I want and conform it into another style. This pajama pattern was perfect. Just changed the fabric, created the zipper/button placket, and added pockets where I wanted them. Super easy!!!! Isn't sewing great! It gives you so many wonderful opportunities to be creative & inventive!!!!!
Wonderful and creative work, Gentleman Jim. I'm always excited when I see a new post from you. I would, however, love to see more details in the construction of your garments, like the button placket and the pockets. (Am I asking for too much?) I like this jacket because of the dropped shoulders and the relaxed look. I will definitely keep this idea of using a pajama pattern for a relaxed look jacket for future sewing.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have been sewing for many years, I'm amazed at all of the oppotunities to learn something totally fresh and new... especially from Gentleman Jim! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills, and I too would like a bit more details of your impeccable work process.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful to see and so true and something we home sewers need to be aware of. Check out the style lines of a garment and you will see so many other options than the one it is intended for.
ReplyDeleteThis was really an outstanding experiment Mr. Jim you succeeded in. Being a tailor I can understand that creativity is needed in our industry everyday to allure people and it gives us a lot when our little efforts make the fabric attractive and force them to buy it. I would like to read more of your experiences if any so that I can try them for my customers too at Marty New Fashion.
